Every overseas nursing route (Germany, Gulf, Australia, NZ, UK) requires proof of English proficiency — but not all regulators accept the same test, and score requirements differ. This guide compares OET and IELTS Academic side-by-side for each destination, shows the 2026 score thresholds from official sources, and gives you a decision framework to pick the right test before you book. No placement promises. No visa guarantees. Only the regulator where you apply decides acceptance.

Key takeaway: Germany is the only major route where English test ≠ registration requirement (German B2 is mandatory). For all others, you pick OET or IELTS based on what your regulator accepts.

3. Australia (NMBA / Ahpra) — 2026 Rule Changes

From 23 April 2026, NMBA updated English requirements (tests taken on/after 23 Apr 2026):

6. Germany — No English Test for Registration

Germany does not require an English test for nurse recognition. The requirement is German B2 (CEFR) and the authority may ask for a nursing-specific language test (Fachsprachprüfung Pflege).

7. Gulf Regulators — Check Each Regulator's Site

Each Gulf regulator (SCFHS, DHA, DoH, MOHAP, QCHP, OMSB) sets its own English language requirements. Requirements vary by classification level and change over time.

Always verify on the regulator's official website before booking. No single table applies to all.

8. Decision Framework — How to Choose

Choose OET if:

  • You want healthcare-specific content (referral letters, patient handovers, clinical notes)
  • You struggle with academic writing (graphs, essays) — OET Writing is a referral letter

Choose IELTS if:

  • You need more test date flexibility (more centres, more dates/month)
  • Cost is a factor (IELTS usually costs less than OET in India; check current fees on the booking sites)
  • You are comfortable with academic English formats
  • Your regulator requires IELTS or has no preference

Red flag: Anyone saying "OET is easier" or "IELTS is accepted everywhere" — verify on the regulator's site.

9. Preparation Tips (Test-Agnostic)

  1. Book early — test centres fill up, especially OET.
  2. Use official practice materials only — Cambridge (IELTS) / OET official sample tests.
  3. Simulate test conditions — timed, no breaks, computer/paper as per your booking.
  4. Target Writing/Speaking — these are where nurses lose marks most often.
  5. Plan for a re-sit — budget for 2 attempts.

Frequently asked questions

Can I combine OET and IELTS scores for one application?

No. Regulators require all components from the same test type in the same sitting (or combined sittings of the same test). You cannot mix OET Listening with IELTS Reading.

My OET Writing is C+ (300). Can I still apply to Australia?

Not under 2026 rules. NMBA now requires OET Writing 350 AND Reading/Speaking 360. A C+ in Writing means you must re-sit. Verify on the NMBA website.

Does Germany accept OET or IELTS for nurse registration?

No. Germany requires German at B2, and the authority may also ask for a nursing-specific language test (Fachsprachprüfung Pflege). English tests are not part of the Anerkennung process.

How long are OET/IELTS scores valid for nurse registration?

2 years for Ahpra and NMC; 3 years for NCNZ. Check your specific regulator — some may require scores from within 12 months at application.
